Aujourd’hui, seulement 25% des films français que nous voyons en salles sont réalisés par des femmes. Lorsque le budget du film est supérieur à cinq millions d’euros, ce taux diminue drastiquement. Une seule femme est détentrice de la Palme d’or (Jane Campion), une seule est récompensée du César de la meilleure réalisatrice (Tonie Marshall)… Et pourtant les réalisatrices ne sont pas moins talentueuses que les réalisateurs. On l’observe régulièrement, notamment pendant ces dernières semaines avec des films forts comme Elle s’en va d’Emmanuelle Bercot, La Vie domestique d’Isabelle Czajka, La Bataille de Solférino de Justine Triet ou encore Grand central de Rebecca Zlotowski. Quand on travaille dans le cinéma, comme nous, on entend souvent que se battre pour la place des femmes dans le secteur est “un faux combat, que dans le cinéma c’est différent des autres secteurs, ici on n’a pas de problème, il y a plein de femmes sur les plateaux et dans les productions”.

Si, en effet, certains métiers du cinéma sont occupés principalement par des femmes (comme celui de scripte ou de maquilleuse), sur d’autres postes pourtant, elles sont peu, voire inexistantes. Il n’y a par exemple que 10% de femmes directrices de la photographie répertoriées à l’Association Française des directeurs de la photographie cinématographique (AFC) en 2013, on est bien loin de la parité… Alors on nous répondra parfois que c’est parce que l’homme et la femme ne sont pas égaux en force, “c’est parce que les caméras, c’est lourd, c’est un métier de mecs tu comprends”. Même constat numéraire pourtant dans un domaine où la force physique n’est pas franchement de mise: les comités d’administration des acteurs du secteur, les directions des équipes d’acquisitions des chaînes de télévision, les comités d’investissement, les comités de sélection des festivals… Et pourtant les écoles de cinéma comme la Fémis forment des classes généralement paritaires d’étudiants, hormis les départements de scripte (100% féminin) ou de son (à l’inverse).

Alors, où sont les femmes du secteur? Pourquoi accèdent-elles si difficilement à des postes-clés de l’industrie et de la création? Il est périlleux de pointer du doigt une ou plusieurs causes directes à ce problème mais il est de notre devoir de nous interroger sur la question, d’aller chercher des données chiffrées, et d’essayer d’y remédier. Accepter cette sous-représentation reviendrait à dire que les femmes sont moins compétentes ou talentueuses que les hommes. Ensemble, femmes et hommes, nous devons prendre en main cette responsabilité collective et viser un objectif d’universalité, sans prendre le chemin de l’essentialisme. Car chaque artiste s’exprime avec son éducation, ses influences, son regard sur le monde à partir de la place qu’il occupe; sans qu’il n’y ait d’écriture ou de mise en scène “féminine” et “masculine”.

Nous avons donc créé en mars Le Deuxième Regard, une association de professionnels du cinéma -de la création et de l’industrie- qui vise à soutenir le rayonnement des femmes dans le cinéma, grâce à des actions concrètes, une mise en réseau de nos membres et plusieurs initiatives politiques et évènementielles. La première étape a été la signature de la Charte pour l’égalité entre les femmes et les hommes du secteur, le 10 octobre dernier, par les ministres Najat Vallaud-Belkacem et Aurélie Filippetti, ainsi que Véronique Cayla, présidente d’Arte France et marraine du Deuxième Regard et Frédérique Bredin, directrice du CNC. Pour citer Najat Vallaud-Belkacem: “Tout a une incidence sur tout: les responsabilités sont à la fois partout et nulle part. C’est la raison pour laquelle cette charte est une bonne charte, elle agit sur tous les leviers à la fois et rend possible une prise de conscience de chacun, dans l’exercice de ses propres responsabilités, et évite ainsi toute forme de fatalisme ou de résignation.” Les signataires de la Charte participent de fait à une réflexion commune sur la place des femmes dans le cinéma et s’engagent à soutenir par différents moyens une meilleure représentativité des femmes dans le secteur. La signature de la charte est ouverte à tous et nous pensons que, grâce à cette politique volontariste, une prise de conscience collective trouvera enfin sa place.

De multiples formes de soutien à la création cinématographique de femmes sont possibles et des initiatives récentes comme Le Bal des réalisatrices sur Ciné + (une programmation de films réalisés par des femmes du 24 septembre au 29 octobre 2013) ou Cinéast(e)s, le documentaire de Julie Gayet et Mathieu Busson (diffusé ce soir sur Ciné +), mettent en lumière la diversité de regards des réalisatrices et montrent à quel point la France possède un vivier de créatrices qu’il faut encourager.

Comment se projeter lorsque trop peu d’exemples de femmes qui réussissent dans le milieu existent?

La place des femmes dans le cinéma est une question décisive de société car le cinéma fait la promotion d’une certaine vision du monde, d’un mode de vie, des rapports hommes-femmes. Le cinéma est un vecteur d’images, de symboles, à travers lequel les jeunes générations se projettent. Mais comment se projeter lorsque trop peu d’exemples de femmes qui réussissent dans le milieu existent? Comme le dit Céline Sciamma dans Cinéast(e)s, il est essentiel que les jeunes filles puissent se dire qu’il n’y a pas que les actrices qui foulent le tapis rouge des festivals de cinéma. “L’identification c’est le premier pas vers la projection. C’est pour cela qu’il faut qu’on soit beaucoup. C’est dans la masse qu’il y aura des regards qui vont changer.”

Nous espérons que l’éveil des consciences sur le manque de femmes dans le cinéma et le rassemblement de toutes nos énergies pour pallier ce manque permettront l’éclosion de nouvelles sensibilités et surtout, de nouvelles vocations.
