The film parties suddenly no longer want us to attend them, the shelter amongst all shelters happily holds out its arms to us, and it’s time to start working out.
Here is nothing like a night… filled with harsh refusals in order to properly resize one’s excessive ego, like those of Jean-Marc and Bruno who boasted around about a party for which neither of them had an invitation – but into which they still intended on smuggling the entire team, six plus-ones, Greta Gerwig, Iris Knobloch and a whole troop of pretentious old bags from Cannes that we’d met on our way. Of course, all of this will go to waste, as for Yal from the Cahiers du Cinéma, who nervously remarks that he’s being expected at Tyler Taormina’s post-screening party -‘ He’ll be upset if I’m not there…’ – where where we find ourselves to be quite bluntly refused as VIP guests. The time has come to muster our primitive hustling techniques, as in our first stays in Cannes: infiltration – ‘Check out the beach nearby to see what the climbing difficulty’s like, would you? Alright, it’s a steep 6A level and I don’t have my harness” – tailing people – for example Paul Schrader and his bulldog-like face as he passes by, in the hopes that we can slither our way in with him at the luxurious cocktail party being held for Oh, Canada, which we’re quite envious of, with its chandeliers and livered waiters.

The operations makes us feel like Travis following Jodie in Taxi Driver – let’s give up, and retreat to the only unmoving shelter, the last resort, the refuge of disappointed party-goers: the club Vertigo, where the party for The Belle from Gaza is held, and where they’re playing Lucky Love, which I seem to be the only person unaware of, since everyone else sings the lyrics by heart. Self-assured, Jacky insists that I register to the 10k-race that is happening the next day in Cannes: so that’s it, it’s done, the night has swallowed me whole only to spit me back out – so what now, onto healthy living, pilates and seedy crackers? No thanks – that’s when I’ll be writing my article anyways.
