Pour ce faire, 62 critiques du monde entier ont choisi 10 films qu’ils ont classés en leur attribuant une note de 1 à 10. Ils ont été invités à juger les œuvres « seulement sur le plan émotionnel », et non sur leur impact commercial ou historique.
Les 5 films en tête sont : Citizen Kane d’Orson Welles, Le Parrain de Francis Ford Coppola, Sueurs Froides d’Alfred Hitchcock, 2001, L’Odyssée de l’espace de Stanley Kubrick, et La Prisonnière du désert de John Ford.

Ces cing réalisateurs sont tous présents plusieurs fois dans le classement. On les retrouve respectivement avec La Splendeur des Ambersons, (11e) talonné par Le Parrain 2, (10e) Pyschose, (8e) Barry Lyndon, (27e) et L’homme qui tua Liberty Valence (45e).
